Hi there,

I sent a wee note to Admissions late last week, inquiring about the cut-offs. Usually they're pretty good with responses via e-mail, but unfortunately, nothing in the cut-off regard, yet. :rolleyes

Cheers,

Kirsteen

Hi there,

Here is U. Ottawa's response re: the cut-offs:

In regards to the WGPA, The cut offs have not been set yet, but they will be identified in our various status letters.

Cheers,

Kirsteen

Hi,

but they will be identified in our various status letters.

...

mean that they will list the cut offs in their rejection/interview invite letters?

p.s. not that it this all makes a difference in the big scheme of things, just curious

Let's pretend that the cut-off is 3.83 wgpa for in-province applicants again this year.

Does that mean that an applicant MUST have the minimum 3.83 wgpa to be considered for an interview?

Or, are there exceptions to this cut-off? Such that, if one has a 3.80 wgpa, with excellent X-curricular activities, volunteers, research, etc, could they still be granted an interview if they don't meet the cut-off?

Or, are you just out of luck if you don't meet the wgpa cutoff...

Thanx

Hi there HOTfuchsia,

Ottawa's selection process is a sequence of hurdles, each of which must be leaped. (See page 3--"Advancement in the Selection Process"--of the following document for the scheme):

www.medicine.uottawa.ca/pdf/policies_2003-2004.pdf

Step 2 is "excellence of marks (WGPA cut-offs) and Step 3 is "assessment of detailed autobiographical sketch". What this means is that when the cut-offs are set, each applicant from each region must be at or above the cut-off for their respective region before they may advance to Step 3. That is, Ottawa will technically not look at the non-academic materials contained within the application until the applicant has been deemed to have met or exceeded the WGPA cut-offs.

I haven't heard of any exceptions to this rule around here, but not wishing to be negative, it may have been possible that others might have? Certainly, if you have any type of extenuating circumstance, you might wish to contact the Admissions Office and speak to them directly. They are willing to listen. :)

(By the way, the above comments apply to undergraduate applicants solely, as graduate applicants are assessed a little differently.)

Cheers, and best of luck,

Kirsteen
