Having some trouble understanding CaRMS

Hey all,

I'm not even in med school yet, so this might be jumping the gun, but I'm having trouble finding the stats I'm looking for, and maybe somebody more familiar with CaRMs could help.

I'm looking for info on Dal's internal med and family med residencies. So, I am looking to know if they typically fill their quotas in the first iteration, or if they even hit their quotas (basically just, how competitive are they?).

I looked here, but, to be quite honest, didn't entirely understand what I was looking at: http://www.carms.ca/pdfs/2010R1_MatchResults/Discipline%20Choice%20of%20CDN%20Grads%20by%20School%20and%20Discipline1_en.pdf

I think that that's just the list of what students from different schools listed as their top choice...

Thanks in advance!

I'm also not in med school, but I thought I'd take a look at the carms website just to see if the info could be found.

here's what i found:

https://w1c.e-carms.ca/pdws/jsp/pd.do?s=953&p=p4&m=1

that lists the number of spots for Dal Residency spots for each specialty. It says they have 43 spots for Canadian Med Student Graduates entering into Family Medicine. These spots are then divided up into the different program locations (should be on the left hand side).

this link shows the match stats for 2008... it says that 78.8% of family medicine applicants matched to their first choice in 2008... this would be all of canada. So, it would follow that if you wanted to match to Dal Family Med you would have a 78.8% chance or something around there (barring any significant changes from 2008) of matching.

http://www.carms.ca/pdfs/2008R1_MatchResults/ST-Canadian%20Graduates%20Matched%20to%20First%20Choice%20Discipline_en.pdf

I'm sure somebody else will come up with some more accurate numbes/current data...

Thanks! This is a good start! Basically what I want is the second link, but broken down into schools! Haha.

This is definitely a great start, it makes it seem like people with IM and FM overall get what they want, however, if Dal's got a particularly competitive IM program for instance, that would be good to know.
