Make sure you touch base with your bank prior to leaving - some debit cards/credit cards don't work internationally. Try not to carry around a purse - I would advise just carrying money in your pocket and your camera on your wrist. BE CAREFUL ON SUBWAYS. Don't lose your passport because it will be a huge pain in the behind if you do. Try to take public transportation whenever you can to cut down on cost - it's much funner too Try and meet new people!! I met a whole bunch of people in the hostels - even if you don't get super close with them I thought it was amazing that at least my life intersected with theirs at that moment given our completely different paths.
