thatonekid Posted June 1, 2011 Report Share Posted June 1, 2011 Have you looked at a graph? VC is the total amount of air you can ever have in your lungs. So then you have to consider how can you get air into your lungs. Very basic explanation: There's always a base amount of air in the lungs (unless you expell all your air). This base level is the ERV. Then, there's the amount of air you inhale/exhale normally (at rest). This is the tidal volume (TV). Finally, you can inhale a lot and have an excess of air in your lungs that you don't have on a regular bases, such as from taking a deep breath in. The extra makes up the IRV. So VC = ERV + TV + IRV = max amount of air in the lungs Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
