Note that one academic reference is preferred, not required. While this would probably be the ideal case, make sure that all your referees can make positive comments that will appeal to the admissions committee. I know people who have gotten in that have had many combinations of references (two academic, two non-academic, 1 of each etc). Memorial places considerable weight on your references. Make sure that your referees know you well and are willing to write you a positive letter.

Last year I used one professor who supervised my thesis, and another professor who taught me, but also employed me as a teaching assistant for 2 years. I was told that my choice of references were "appropriate", whatever that means.

 

I'm sure that's not much help, but at least it's something.
