Guest wattyjl
from looking at the first iteration matches, it seems like 8 US-MGs and 15 IMGs made it into the first round... anybody know how or why? am i reading it correctly?
Guest moo
USMGs can match into the first round like CMGs. No surprise there. I think IMGs can match into certain provinces in the first round like in PQ, NFLD or something. Not certain.

Guest endingsoon
Wow...just like we all thought, was a super competative year for Int. Medicine, esp. in comparison to last year. 2004: Applicants to this Discipline Only - 85 Total Applicants to this Discipline - 188 2005: Applicants to this Discipline Only - 116 Total Applicants to this Discipline - 456 (not a typo!) Wow, that is just insane....
Guest JSS02
I think there was a typo for that 188 total applicants stat... just a few lines down it says that 188 people ranked internal #1, and 190 spots ended up being filled in the first round. Pretty hard to do that when only 188 people apply. Also, there were 390 applicants the year before that (2003). I'm sure the numbers change every year, but probably not to THAT degree... Guest walton1
The statistics for 2005 are out now too, in addition to the match report. Looks like emergency is indeed the new plastics. Lots of happy urologists and ENT specialists.... for that matter, there are all sorts of happy surgery residents now. Plastics, ophtho and cardiac still look iffy but not as much as in the past. Probably all this info is present in the match report but it's a little easier to digest in the stats section. wally
Guest UWOMED2005
Yeah - I was very surprised by some of those stats! Looking strictly at the ratios of people ranking specialties #1 to number of spots, Emerg and Derm were the most competitive specialties. . . and by a bit. Plastics dropped (26 for 14,) or at least the number of people interested stayed the same while the number of spots increased. Despite being described as a 'competitive year,' the stats for Ophtho look pretty typical (32 for 19.) Internal looked similar to other years (roughly as many interested as number of spots, though some of those interested would be forced out by others getting IM as a second or third choice.) Emerg (59 for 27?!? ratio 2.19) was just ridiculous. I wonder what that bodes for those interested in the "2 + 1 program". . .
Guest barkthedog
the 2+1 are supposed to be getting a lot more competitive, especially emergency, and a lot of schools are going to be protecting their own graduates when it comes to getting positions. Guest UWOMED2005
In some cases, that is true. Queen's now has a blatant "we take our own" policy. NOFM gives preference to applicants from the north. And some of the programs out west have spots assigned to service commitment agreements in smaller communities. But from what I have heard speaking to residents who have actually applied to these programs, it's still not as bad as sometimes advertised to medical students. If you're interested in the "2+1" program, I think it is very important to know what you're getting yourself into!
