Help with carbohydrate question (TBR)

I'll upload a picture of the question. I don't really understand TBR's wording to the solution, especially when determining what is alpha and what is beta in a linkage.

It says that when looking at the bond in the direction of fructose the bond is beat because the anomeric carbon is pointing up, but i just don't see it. It looks down in both cases to me.

Beta means that the OH on the anomeric carbon (which is C2 in the case of fructose) and C6 are on the same side of the ring. In the diagram, you can see that C6 (which is on the right side) is below the plane of the ring, as is the -O- linkage, which is formed from the anomeric OH.

Hope that makes sense.
