Why don't more Canadians apply to the states?

There are a few reasons:

1) You cannot apply to state schools. Only private schools - which are often more competitive.

2) Private schools tend to limit spots to international students. The system has a strong preference to US schools.

3) If you are going to pay $200,000 in tuition alone, why not apply to Australia or Scotland that are much more favourable to Canadian students.

That being said. US has AMAZING MD PhD programs, only a few US schools take international students. But you get to do an MD and PhD for free - and they give you about 20K a year to live on. I applied (and was promptly rejected) to the Harvard MIT joint MD PhD last year - best rejection letter ever.

omg.. you are wrong on ALL THREE POINTS

(1) many public schools, including some state schools, accept international applicants.

(2) private schools have the benefit in that a lot of them truly don't care where you're from..because, for most of them, they just want the best students/candidates, and who will end up making them more famous.. so no.. they do not, generally, limit their international applicants... look at interview/accepted/matriculated numbers for some popular pvt schools.

(3) applying to any other country is a waste of time and money IMO.. there are countless issues with people doing their degrees in australia and not being able to do residencies there OR be able to come back.

you are very misinformed.
