Guest bcdentalgirl
I'm talking about your first real live patient, people. Now, I know that you have lots of simulation practice and you work up to the real thing but it must still be a little nerveracking. I am trying to imagine how I would feel. I imagine I would be extremely overconcerned about hurting the person and subsequently end up prolonging their agony. Any good stories, urban myths etc... Guest toothy
hmm while I was shadowing a dentist I had a chance to put in tofflemire and wedges into a patient (haven't done anything with live patients up to this point) and the dentist left the operatory to tend to another patient... so I tried to fit the band in and the kind of resistance (or lack of it) felt really different from the dummy. After slugging it out for a couple of minutes I was satisfied with what I did, but that was before I noticed it was on the wrong tooth...

Guest toothy
hi bcdentalgirl I'm just done 1st year. Of course at school we had chances to take impressions and exams of each other but that doesn't count since we are all students and it's just lots of fun
Guest bcdentalgirl
wow that's so cool that you're already doing dentistry! I keep hearing about how at UBC, the first 2 years are dental free (as far as hands on stuff). Where do you go? I'm currently shadowing a dentist and as I have become more and more comfortable, I have such an urge to actually DO something.
Guest toothy
I go to UWO, which seems to be one of the more hands-on schools in Canada. We also have to log at least 15 hours assisting upper-years in the clinic, and that's a neat experience too.
