deciding between schools

Hey folks, I'm just seeing what kind of criteria people are using to decide between different dental schools. I know proximity to loved ones usually comes into play but does it really matter what school you go to? Is there any benefit to going to a school with a smaller class size, than one with a larger one?

I'm asking this question becuase I've pretty much put off finding apartments etc. at edmonton to wait and see if i get into western but I'm not even sure which i would accept yet. (because the tuition is pretty similar so costs aren't really a big deal)

Any input would be appretiated :)

It doesn't matter which school you go to; you'll be a dentist eventually, unless............

1) you want to specialize after graduation, then you may want to consider which school has more reputation??

2) you want to do research while being at school.

3) you want to practice in alberta or ontario, then by the time you graduate, you already know some people in the province that you can refer your patients to, in case you need to do a referral.

4) you like certain didactic aspects of the school you prefer.

5) follow your instinct, and don't worry too much.

6) patient pool, patient pool, and again enough patient pool for you to complete a dental program with ease.

7) scholarships, if you love the idea of free $$$. [All dentists are cheap, especially when they just start their own clinics. A trait for a successful dentist.]

thanks for the info, theres so much to think about when choosing schools. I'm still not sure, but i'm leaning toward alberta just becuase I think I want to stay here for some time. hopefully its a good choice! :)

i would go to western because they have separate dental class instead of combined med/dent.

it's such a pain in the a$$ to study things you'll never need to know as a dentist. :x

Go to UT, it is the best with their big clinics and quite a few clinics. They even have a peds clinic. Lots of research ops there, lots of specialties there, and the school brings in top notch specialists to teach the different blocks. But we are talking between Alberta and Western........so go with Western, at least their weather is better than Alberta's.:P

Thanks for the input guys/gals, i think my decision will come down to proximity to family, but hey, western has not even sent out acceptances so this discussion could be moot in a couple of weeks, oh well, its good to think about these things before hand i guess (just in case ;) )
