damms
Hey, very new here (just registered today), so I apologize that this is probably a repeat post. Just looking for advice on useful electives to take with the goal of applying to Emergency Medicine. Any insight would be great and/or especially any links to past threads on this topic already. Satsuma
Almost any elective can be argued useful to apply to EM in some way. You'll obviously need some EM electives. Anest - can be good to learn intubation skills Ophtho - to learn to use a slit lamp really well (but not if they're going to have you doing cataract surgeries etc, that is less useful) Rheum or sports med or physiatry - to learn a good MSK exam Derm - people do come into the ER with alot of rashes Core like gen surg/medicine/peds for obvious reasons Plastics - hand stuff Radiology - if it's going to be more than just sitting there using up oxygen in the small darkened room, and someone is actually going to teach you how to read stuff! (plain films, head CTs) ICU - sick patients, pressors, vents etc. Geriatrics (especially if there is an acute geriatric unit where you are) - you will see alot of older people and it's important to understand their issues properly and learn from people who are knowledgeable.
