carazadie
Hey everyone. I'm increasingly worried about not matching in the city where I intend to practice (likely, Toronto). Was hoping to get your thoughts about relocating right after residency. I'm intending to have an outpatient office-based practice, either in psychiatry or family medicine (haven't yet decided for sure). If I fail to match to Toronto, but intend to relocate there, would it be easier to move right after residency, or to work for a few years (locums, etc) to gain some experience before moving? How difficult do you think the transition would be? I should specify that I'm not from Toronto, so I would be unfamiliar with the healthcare infrastructure there. Satsuma
I think you just need to take life as it comes. You can't predict how you are going to feel about moving when you are done residency now! Everyone's experiences and situations will be different. So you've asked a question that is hard to answer in any generalizable way. See how the match goes, try to enjoy the years of residency, wherever you end up, and then see how you feel. Lactic Folly
Other options are to do electives or locums where you intend to practice, in order to gain familiarity with the region.
carazadie
Good advice all around. Thanks. I hadn't thought much about residency electives, but of course that makes sense. And yes, I realize that I'm worrying prematurely. Typical med student, gotta plan for every possibility.
