First of all congratulations, to all of those presently looking for housing in Ottawa. There are a few things to consider before you move to Ottawa.

 

1. If you don't mind the suburb like atmosphere of the pixley area, or Alta Vista: These are good places to live because rent is not too expensive and you have the advantage of being able to walk to school (or a very short bus ride). There is a small gym at the rehab centre (close to school) that you can take advantage of (you will need to buy a membership). The transitway is close by and so you can get to shopping and downtown fairly easily. I would say a good chunk of med students live in Alta Vista and another chunk in Pixley.

 

2. If suburbia is not for you (and trust me is not for me). You can live in Sandy Hill. Is a nice area, you are close to all places where block parties will be held, very close to downtown (5 min walking distance). Free shuttle stops at main campus and takes you to school everyday. Takes about 20 minutes to get to school with the shuttle. You can walk to the 2 main gyms on campus (membership included with student fees). Disadvantage of this area is that rent is a bit more expensive. Another good chunk of med students live in Sandy Hill

 

3. Riverside: About a 20 minute walk (middle of nowhere really). Main advantage is that you are right on the transitway (so maybe a 5 min bus ride to school). Really close to downtown via bus. Choice of many buses. Many med students live here as well.

 

4. Lees: In between main campus and school. Free shuttle stops here as well (about a 15 min ride to the health science campus). About a 20 minute walk to downtown, 10 minute walk to the gyms in main campus. Transitway is really close. A few med students live here.

 

5. The rest of the places in Ottawa to consider are

 

Centre town: (I would not live there, you would need to take the bus or drive to school everyday, parking at school is $130 for the upcoming year). I am not the biggest fan of public transportation in Ottawa but it will get you to school. Rent tends to be cheaper than in Sandy Hill.

 

Hull has the advantage that rent is a lot cheaper than in Ottawa. However very few of your classmates will live in Hull and you may feel isolated from all the other activities taking place and if you go out you will most likely need to cab it home after the buses stop running. Things to consider: it takes me (and I live close to school) 20 min to drive to school in rush hour (morning). I think it will take you about 40 minutes to get to school from Hull. Yes, most people that live in Hull tell me that it takes them 20 minutes to drive to school, I tend to think that occurs only during no rush hour I am half way between Hull and school. And you need to add the cost of a bus pass (at least $70 as you need to have one that covers both Hull and Ottawa) or as I said before parking $130 a month.

 

Saint Laurent (some people live there, is not too expensive and about a 10 minute ride to school

 

Most places in Ottawa are nice. Vanier has the reputation of being a bit ghetto, not particularly close to school but rent is fairly cheap (compared with the rest of Ottawa).

Ottawa U called me at work at 2:00 pm today and asked me if I was still considering Ottawa U for medschool!

I was dumbfounded...I still am! I replied "OH YA!" I must have sounded stupid since I said it more in the tone of "HELL YA!".

 

So I'll be seeing you in Ottawa Wassabi101! Thank you everyone for your support...this site is awesome! I am looking forward to meeting you in person!

 

To everyone else waiting...I'm crossing my fingers for you! Just remember, I've been waiting two years but the wait is definitely worth it!
