<title>How to tell someone they have a chronic illness</title>

<pagetext>This question came up in an interview-

How would you tell a patient they have a chronic (incurable) illness?

<title>Mock Q: Ethics of conjoined twin surgery</title>

<pagetext>Natasha and Courtney Smith were born at Queen Charlotte's and Chelsea Hospital, west London, joined from the belly button to the top of the chest.

The twins chared a heart and a liver. If they twins are not parted, doctors fear they will both die within a year as their shared heart is not strong enough to keep them both alive.

When a heart is shared, there can only be one outcome for one of the twins, who must be sacrificed to save the life of the other.

In this case, doctors fully informed the parents of their options, and it was the parent's wish that one of their daughters be sacrificed to save the other.

Ethical dilema:

1) Given that our society must respect the sanctity of life, is it even right to separate the twins?

2) Would it be consiedered murder to perform surgery and let one twin die? Alternatively, would it also be considered murder to do nothing and let both twins pass away naturally, given that we have the medical knowledge and technology to save one twin?

3) Do the parents have the right to decide which one of the twins survives? If yes, how are we to value one life over another? Do we as a society have a moral/ethical/legal right to value one life over another?

3) Should a doctor follow the wishes of the parents to sacrifice the life of one child for another?

Note: medical tests indicate taht either of the twins has a good chance of surviving if surgery is performed

<title>Romanow Report</title>

<pagetext>I read the Romanow Report's executive summary today, got interested, and started printing off the whole thing (at work of course, that's alot of paper!). Don't know if I want to put the time in while I'm prepping for interviews though, perhaps it would be better to save it for the summer.

What do y'all think-is it relevant this year?

Cheers
