Ok, i got this one in my interview at Dalhousie a couple of weeks ago:

 

Your doing your residency in surgery and your called in late on a friday night to perform surgery, and as you are scrubbing in, you can smell alcohol off the breath of the doctor supervising your surgery (and thus evaluating you as a resident). What would you do?

SOME TIME last January, a 22-year-old woman living in a group home in Orlando, Fla., was raped. The woman is now 5-months pregnant. She is also severely mentally retarded. Experts say she has the cognitive and emotional capacity of a 1-year-old child.

 

In addition to her severe mental retardation, she suffers from cerebral palsy, autism and is prone to violent seizures. These conditions make having a baby a very dangerous proposition for this unfortunate young woman. Because of her physical impairment, she could die if she tries to deliver the baby.

 

 

Question: what shoudl be done in this case - protect the woman, or protect the fetus - (remember at 5 months - or 20 weeks gestation period - the fetus' nervous system is fully developed and functioning - thus, at this stage the fetus is a person in the biological sense as well as in the ethical sense in that they have the capacity of sapient cognitive awareness and the capacity for self-awareness and thus becomes a person).
