<title>Greatest Success/Failure</title>

<pagetext>For this topic should I stay away from academic experiences? I do have the success of being chosen by peers and profs. to become a PBL leader. This is kind of academic.

Any suggestions?

Umm, I dont know if that is success - its more of an accomplishment...I think is success is something you have personally done, maybe you were in charge of organising something in your PBL that went really well...

Failure....UHOH.....I dont know what to say for this....Should you talk about oh this happened but here is how I tried to improve on it? Kind of like a weakness and here is what I have done to improve?

Hi Rainfern,

My greatest "failure" is an experience which sort of resonated with me as a moment where I disappointed myself and probably could have changed things if I had tried harder or been more mature, but I didn't.

That being said, not everyone can think of experiences like that, but everyone has probably had a time where they were unsatisfied with how they acted, what they did, or moments when they sort of "discovered" their weaknesses.

When an interviewer asks for a failure, they want a failure not a weakness, so I think you have to be clear about the difference. They are also probably looking for what you have learned from your failure - what you've taken away from it - and how it has affected you.

I was just reading up on some interview tips and one states "Be prepared to askt the interviews questions. You can carry them in a portfolio with paper and a pen."

I wasn't planning on taking anything into the interview but after reading this I realized that I'm not sure if I should or not? Is it a good idea to carry paper and a pen incase the need for it comes up or is this really unecessary? Anyone with previous interview experience please help me out here!! Thanks!

I have several successes I could use (overcoming cancer and completing my BScH with a 3.8GPA at the same time would probably be the one I would talk about) but as far as failures go-Its a tough choice.

Probably the thing that has affected me most was not getting into Med School last year. I had to go through the sadness and the dissapointment in myself but gradually I realized that developing as a person is as important as developing academically for a career in medicine and I took my year off as a learning experience.

In many ways it was a good thing. It gave me a chance to see what the world is like and I learned a lot about communication and teamwork in the business world. I also had a chance to become more connected to myself, my outside interests and my reaction to having to fill up my own time (something as I'm sure you all know, is not a real concern in a challenging University program). I had the opportunity to be whoever I wanted to be for a year without the pressures of school and it gave me new enthusiasm for medicine.

<title>Strength/Weakness</title>

<pagetext>I'm not sure how to tackle this? I do have the strength of compassion since I have been working in the health field with patients and tend to go beyond my duty of care to help, but I feel my greatest strength is my hard work ethics toward accomplishing goals. The compassion topic would be a better fit for med.

With weakness, I do have a lot, but i'm not sure what not to say other than the obvious. I feel that I can be very competitive. Is that a good weakness?

Any suggestions or comments welcomed?

<title>Non traditional applicant and interviews</title>

<pagetext>Hello,

This is to all those non-traditional applicants out there. I believe being non-traditional is defined as applying at a later stage in life, usually after having started a career in a different field.

How do the interviewers view such applicants, and what questions do they ask. I would think that the questions are slightly different than for the majority of students who apply with 3 years of undergrad.

I would think that the non-traditional applicant would need to justify to the committee why the career change is taking place, and why medicine wasnt pursued in the first place.

Just wondering what your thoughts are.
