How does one approach an ethical question?

[Guest physiology]

There was discussion about a 14 year old girl who had PID and was accompanied by her friends to the hospital.

 

Regarding this question and others like it, do you try to offer solutions RIGHT away? (Or the BEST solution in your opinion?)

 

Or is it better to think out a loud and say things like "Well, considering she is 14, she is no longer a minor"

or "Seeing that she brought in her friends as opposed to her parents, she probably has something to hide (ie sexual activity)"

 

Or, do you try to multiple solutions and justify them with the concerns I've raised above?

I am wondering how old one must be to be considered a minor. In terms of informed consent, how old should a patient be to be considered mature enough (and hence competent) to make their own decisions regarding their health?
