For the most part, the recommended way to do this has been to read a newspaper every day. I've encountered two problems with this: 1) I don't have the time or patience to sort through the entire paper every day looking for current health care news, and 2) the press seems to have recently lost interest in health care (to a certain extent). I guess they feel that readers are sick of hearing about it. I've recently started reading the canadian medical association journal, and it seems pretty useful. Do any of you current med students think that the journal is an adequate way to keep up with current health care issues? Or is the newspaper still the best way to go? Thanks

Guest Elliott
Depending on what province you are in, I know in BC they have a show where they discuss health issues and sometimes feature the Minister of Health Services. Also, there is another show that runs on Knowledge Network (sorry the name has slipped my mind) that highlights not only health issues but current developements in the medical field. You may want to check out http://www.cma.ca as well. Cheers, Elliott
Guest blinknoodle
I know that there are also a bunch of health care news mailing lists (I subscribed to them during my health policy class). The two that we used were CHERA and E-Watch. Basically they give you a summary of many of the health care news from that week and provide you with links for full-text. To subscribe to CHERA you need to be a member and you can find out more at www.chera.ca. You can access E-Watch freely at kuuc.chair.ulaval.ca/english/master.php?url=bulletin.php. -blinknoodle

Guest physiology
I'm on a posting blitz here I know, but, just wanted to ask some general questions. Would you agree with the statement, that "We all approach medicine initially because of the money, but then as we mature, we see otherwise." And if do we see "otherwise," is it because it's taboo to say such things in the interview? Or do we learn to understand the "deeper meaning of life" with respect to medicine? Or, here's another one: "We all initially volunteer for superficial reasons, be it medical school, resume boosting, to feel "good about ourselves", etc. I ask because I see my friends who volunteer, and I question their intentions and wonder if there are ulterior motives. Volunteering is about reciprocity - no doubt about it, but I see it as a exchange of information where learning life experience (not available in any lecture hall) goes both ways. I don't see it stacking cans of food at the local food bank, and then asking the director to vouch for me on my extracurricular sheet. Yes, I would do it anyway, but I actively seek out "better" volunteer positions where learning is in abundance and I get to deal with people, and not menial slave labour tasks (like licking envelopes for the Heart and Stroke Foundation).
