International Student Coming To Dal -- Please Help

Hi,

I'm an international student from "International Medical University", in Malaysia. I've been posted to Dalhousie, joining in May 2004 and haven't any idea what to expect so would really appreciate if any kind folks out there could give me some answers.

First off would be....where's the best place to stay? I'm looking at the hostels, but which is the most convenient? I see that there are compulsory meal plans and such for the hostel residencies - would you recommend those? Generally speaking, would you even recommend staying in the hostels?

Also, generally speaking how do IMU students fare at Dal - do they integrate well at all or are they pretty much on their own?

I've heard that it's kinda hard to "break in" especially when we join the third year students who already have formed their own friendships. I don't mind hearing the truth, it should prepare me better.

I hear that Dal clerkships jump all over the place. How does accommodation work then, when we are posted all over?

Finally, transport - what is the public transport system like, especially in winter? I have a bike - is Dal conducive for cycling?

Coming from a country where it's summer all-year round, I'm a bit intimidated by the freezing temperatures of Canada. I've never even seen snow, so I don't quite know what expect.

Any advice would be most welcome.

Thanks

Karen

<title>After the interview...selection process</title>

<pagetext>Hi,

I just had an interview at Dal and am looking for some info on how selection works from here? It is not very specific on the website. Is a certain weight given to each part of the application (marks, interview, supplementary info?)

Also, I know that the admissions committee randomly reviews about 20 files at a time. Doesn't that mean that the ealier your file turns up, the greater your chance of selection? I mean, if you were in the first batch, no spots would be taken so the committee would be less likely to reject you. If your file came up in May, most spots would be filled and they might even fill up before your file is reviewed...

Anyway, something sounds funny about the whole process. I think I have it wrong and just want to know the facts. Can anyone give some insight?

Thanks

<title>OOP Interviews</title>

<pagetext>HI,

I don't know how many of you have checked the Dal website lately, but the admissions page has been updates.

Apparently, OOP applicants will be notified by February 9th

Hopefully they can send the notification before the weekend
