k508
Can someone comment on this +1 training!? It seems unlikely to me that you could learn what you need to know in 1 year when there isn't a whole lot of overlap with what you'd do in fam residency (unlike emerg etc) Do people find jobs with this +1 qualification, particularly if you're looking for part -time in a community hospital? I'm curious to hear of anyone's experience of hearing about this in NS in particular.
A-Stark
I can't speak to the overall job prospects, but hospitals in NS generally have FRCPC anesthetists (this includes places like Kentville, Bridgewater, Yarmouth, etc). I'm not aware that there are any GP-As in Nova Scotia.
Lactic Folly
This wasn't in NS, but I did work with GP-As in a town of around 5,000. They were primarily GPs for the town (covering clinic, hospital, emergency), and those with additional skill in anesthesia would also rotate through the OR. katakari
I am in a town of 40k right now in southwest ontario and my preceptor told me that all but one of the anesthetists in the hospital are 2+1. They run clinic on the side.
futureGP
Typical setting is a small community <10 000, and as gpa yu have clinic, hospital with small ER, small inpatient, and maybe 1-2 OR. Theres a surgeon who wants to do hernias or dentist wanting to do peds dent. As GPA you do half to 1 day a week of OR. It is not lucrative because youll make more seeing patients in that time doing low risk cases. But it keeps life interesting.
