...here's your chance!

Go here for more details:

Match Day was yesterday for all fourth year medical students (third year for U of Calgary and McMaster) in Canada, and these are the unfilled positions after the first round of matching. What this essentially means is that these spots were left empty, because either the medical students, or the residency admin at that location couldn't come to an agreement on hiring a resident. For those of you that don't have the lingo, a resident is someone completing their additional training after medical school. Family practice residency is 2 years long, and all other specialties are between 4-6 years.

If you look at this list, you'll see some pretty amazing opportunities that have been left behind. These could have been filled by any member of the graduating class of 2001 had he/she filled out an application. Therefore, as you can see from the available positions, even if you came within 0.1% of failing each of your courses, and graduated dead last in your class, as long as you filled out an application, you could still become a(n):

- cardiac surgeon

- neurologist

- internist (internal medicine)

- general surgeon

- *NEUROSURGEON!!!*

- obstetrician/gynecologist

- orthopedic surgeon

- psychiatrist

- thoracic surgeon

Pretty amazing eh?

There's a good chance the above link might someday disappear, so if you are interested, I'd print it out while I could.

Thanks Ian for this resource, and the rest of this site.

The stats on The Match are still available (as well as stats for previous years).

Go to:

www.carms.ca/ranking/webrank.htm

and click on the "Statistics" link in the top right.

Make sure you have Javascript on.

I have a number of years to go before I worry about The Match but I still found it interesting.

Thanks,

Andora
