Hope this helps somewhat. A significant part of successfully matching is spending time on away electives so that you can get your face and name out there. Naturally, if you are trying to match in the States, you would want to spend time at some of the American programs you hoped to match into. This may be more difficult to do in a Canadian med school; I've gotten the sense that many of the US schools are very flexible as far as elective schedules go. I'd think that Mac has a wide array of elective time; UBC is a bit more structured, and we don't have official elective time until Med 4 (ie. zero elective time in all of Med 3).
