Hello all,

I know it is kinds of early and silly for these sorts of questions but I can’t wait to know all the details about the program.

1. How many courses do we have each semester. I looked into registration form and 7 courses are listed. Are all these courses for one semester or one year?

3. How is the schedule for first day in case of hours and days in classes?

2. All the electives that you can start from the first year, are we getting credit toward the actual electives in 4th yr?

3. Are we able to do electives in hospitals other than the ones in Ottawa?

4. Any suggestion for pre- review before classes start, I have read in one forum saying to review biochem

Thanks a lot

Sara

1. You don`t really take "courses". Everything is done in blocks. So for example we are in our renal block...so we get courses on pharm, anatomy, pathology, histo, physiology etc...pertinent to renal. But you aren`t in an anatomy class or a histology class.

2. schedule...is variable week to week/ day to day. You get a schedule at the beginning of each block. PBL is always Mon morning at 8:30 and Fri morning at 8:30. Most of Tuesday afternoon and Friday afternoons are free of classes.

3. Electives you do in 1st year do not count as 4th year electives. They are meant for you to explore different fields in 1st and 2nd year. In 4th year you actually have responsibility in your electives...they are different.

4. Yes you can do electives at hospitals outside of Ottawa

5. You are going to be studying for the next several years. Enjoy the summer. Leave the studing for when you are actually in school.

Hope that helps!

Hello Sara and welcome to Medicine at UO!

We don't have 'courses' per say. We learn things in here in blocks. For example, when you get to the cardio block all your lectures will be focused on the heart. You will also meet in a small group on monday morning and you'll read over a case with ~7 other classmates with a preceptor present (aka PBL!). You and your fellow PBL members will make a list of all the concerns/issues you think are important in this persons specific case. You'll meet again on friday and you will discuss as a group the information you learned regarding this person and their case. The sweetest part is this: when you get to the end of the block you will have 1 exam which covers all the material you learned in that block. Usually the exams are in the form of MCQ, SAQ and a lab/anatomy bell ringer. You won't have 1 2-hour exam on physiology, another 2-hour exam on pharmocology, etc. It's 1 exam (usually 2-3 hours written and 1 hour doing the bellringer anatomy/histology part where you ID specimens and histology slides)

You'll typically have 2-3 afternoons off a week (done around 1pm and it's usually tues, wed and friday) which is good for studying, electives, working out, having a life, etc.

If you do electives in first year it is something that will show up on your deans letter which becomes relevant when you start applying for a residency spot.

You can do an elective where ever you want. However, if you want to do one in BC you'll likely have to find a physician yourself who is willing to take you on.

Don't review anything at all before coming to school. Relax and enjoy your time off. There's plenty of time to study and review things once you get here!

Congrats!
