Are there any nice beaches around the Kingston area? Something that would make a nice day-trip? I'm sure there must be lots, but I'm unfamiliar with the area, so I don't know whats good, and what to stay away from....Thanks!

For beaches, I'd recommend taking a drive to Sandbanks. It's less than 2 hours (not exactly sure how long) and there's a gorgeous sandy beach and clear water. There are other beaches in the same area of prince edward county, just west of Kingston.

I'm not aware of anything closer

Although not a beach, wolf island is also really nice to go to for a day if you like walking around or biking. The ferry is free and it's beautiful!

There's a casino called Thousand Island Charity Casino 20 minute drive east of Kingston. Exit 647. Lots of student go there at night. Costs $30 taxi ride to get there.

given the countryside in the kingston area, i'd assume the answer to this is yes, i just haven't looked into it yet...

does anyone know if there's any good mountain biking close by? (preferably within biking distance since while i do have a bike rack, i don't have a car to put it on!!)

hi turtle,

i've also looked into mountain biking in and around k-town. There really isn't much in kingston. The military base used to have great trails but they've shut them down. Check out this link for more info about trails in Ontario: http://www.dirtworld.com/trails/traillist.asp?id=57

btw... there is a mountain biking club at Queen's and they organize group rides if you are interested.

hope this helps!

Sandbanks is great for the beach as mentioned before.

If you want to check out the thousand islands and visit a cool castle (Boldt castle) you can drive about 40 minutes east of Kingston to Rockport. It's kind of an "old people" kind of thing to do if you know what I mean, but it's gorgeous.

Also right in Kingston you can rent kayaks at Ahoy rentals at the corner of West and Ontario. Also gorgeous and a lot of fun!

You're not really going to want to go swimming in Lake Ontario - its not exactly clean. If you're looking to swim somewhere, the RMC gym has a sweet gym, and its 6 bucks for a day pass (unless you happen to know someone who goes to RMC, then they can get you in for $3 as a guest). If you're looking for a beach, as far as I know, Sandbanks is the closest nice beach, but I could be mistaken. I haven't spent too many summers in K-town, and the few that I have, I spent working 2 jobs, so there wasn't much time to look for beaches. There are some nice water-side parks within the city though (grassy rather than sandy).

turtle,

There's a farmer who has mountain biking trails in his field who has opened it up to club members in the area. I haven't been there but I heard that if you've got a UCI license or citizen permit he lets you use his trails. There are a few local clubs/teams (one of them is called Frank's RedHot I believe) who run wednesday night rides in the kingston area but since I haven't been there in the summer I haven't been on any of them. Someone told me that they meet at 1255 Unity Rd., at 5:30pm. As far as I know they let you go with them twice without committing to being on a team - you just have to sign a waiver.

Hope this helps.
