GPA in 70's range. Good enough for UBC dental school?

I am a UBC resident and my marks after 1st, 2nd, and 3rd years are 77%, 79%, and 74% respectively. Give my low GPA, do I stand a chance of getting into UBC dental school? Thanks!

If you pull off some epic scores on the DAT and have a solid resume, then you should be able to sneak in an interview.

No guarantees though!

What you need to do is absolutely rock your 4th year and get a good couple reference letters. If you manage all that and don't screw up the interview, you'll get in.

UBC will drop your worst year if you have completed 4 or more years, as long as it is not your most recent year that sucks.

There is always the states too.

You can do it, you'll just have to giv'r for the next year or two. Good luck.

At least for this year, UBC calculated rankings based on 30% GPA, 30% DAT, 30% interview score and 10% LOR, ECs, personal attributes.

It's still possible, but for your best chance, get a stellar DAT score (Kaplan def.), get super marks in 4th year, and prep as much as you can for the interview. Who gets in is based on this formula, so work with it.

Best of luck to you :)

Strictly speaking from my own experience and personal opinion - your chances are not looking good. But you'll never know if you don't try.

I think what jenleemo said is reflective of what needs to be done to get in. U definietly still got a chance so hang on to it and just give it ur best.

Cheers

hey smooth,

i say that u find out how different schools calculate their GPAs. From personal experience in calculation of GPA, I found out that some schools would drop your worst year or worst course each year provided some conditions (such as taking a full course load).

There is still hope... American schools?

Ah so you have your sights set on UBC. Um are you sitting on $176,000? And if you are where do you live? Man seriously for what you are paying for, I would go out of province. Your tuition is being used to pay for a building that was never needed in the first place. However, if you want, spend the $200, and test your luck. Be sure to wear pants to the interview though, that's what got me the first couple of times. Also do not do the robot when you enter the interview room. Not everyone is a Chappelle fan.

Given my poor grade, I don't think that I will have a chance for other out-of-province schools since I am a BC resident. Cost is not a factor for me now. I just want to get into a dental school, so I am planning to apply for American schools.

FYI: many american dent schools have rolling admissions, meaning there's no set deadline to apply- it's the first qualified candidates who apply who get offers.

If you're planning to go south, then apply as early as you can for the best chance. I believe the applications are available on AADSAS June 1.

* note that if you haven't written the DAT yet, you're application won't be considered complete or reviewable until DAT scores are received from the CDA. For Nov DAT this means around Christmas time- which is acutally very late in the application cycle.

Best

Also, you may want to write the U.S. DAT if you want your application to be looked at before December when the Can. DAT scores will be out...offers of admission in the states can be given out as early as Dec. 1.

yes- the American DAT is a great option. It's computer-based and administered nearly every day of the year.

There's no carving, but you have quantitative reasoning and orgo chem in addition to the PAT, BIOL/Gen Chem, and RC.

As far as American schools go, apply early!!!! My GPA by their standards was very high, but I still got screwed at a lot of schools because I applied "late" in October, even though most of the listed deadlines for applications are in December or even March. If you can't get it in by September, save your money, cause after that point it's sadly just a cash-grab for them. Anyways I managed to at least squeeze into NYU right near the end there, so I got lucky.

P.S : Don't worry if you don't have your reference letters all ready. Submit your AADSAS app. and your transcripts (they take the longest) and then send in your L.O.Rs to them later. It'll speed up the process.

Well it depends if it's private or public, state funded, or if you are in-state/out-of-state.

If you are in-state then if you have a cumm. gpa of about 3.5 and DAT averages from 17-19, plus you have the well-roundedness they're looking for..then you have a good chance. If you are out of state the cumm. gpa is slightly higher depending on the school...around 3.7 average, and DAT score goes a little higher like 18-20s...not so bad. Some schools like Ohio state require at least 20 hours of observatory time in a gen. practice within the U.S. (of course they highly recommend you do more than that and observe a specialist as well...). They all want reference letters from science profs and sometimes dentists, plus a personal statement (or more, since some have supplemental applications). Although AADSAS makes it easy to apply to multiple schools.

re: american schools,

its alot easier to get in as long as they accept canadian students (alot of schools dont) ... because they scale your gpa up also (quite a bit) and they also take the canadian dat score ... (when u fill in the application u'll convert your grades online - and you'll see that they are increased quite a bit)

a great source of information is the "ADEA official guide to dental schools" also known as "Admission requirements of U.S and Canadian dental schools"

if u go to ubc - its available at woodward library ... so just sign it out .. no need to buy it

its got the stats for every school in the states and even some canadian schools

mainly just go thru and see which schools have accepted canadian students in the past couple years and how many .. then u can look at tuition costs and whatever else will help u decide where to apply

a mid 70's gpa from ubc will get u into a fair amount of schools in the states so long as u apply early in the cycle and the rest of ur application is good (ie. good references, dat etc) ... the easiest school is NYU .. they have a ton of canadian students each year and they have the lowest accepted gpa I think .. BUT they are by far the pricey-est school in north america (especially living costs)

adversay why are u so curious about american schools now ?? .. are u gonna ditch ubc after already suffering thru first year :P

and shouldnt u be cramming right now :eek

or are u procrastinating like me - lol

yo just apply to the US, saves u more time.

To people who always ask if they have a chance, my answer is simple.

you don't have a chance in hell if you don't apply. just app;y and find out.

Hahaha Madflossin'... like $45,000/year is not enough huh? I guess I am just curious for no reason. Yeah, I know we have to cram, but hell I am not built to study all day, every day. I still haven't succumb to coffee yet.

hey thanks for everyone's help . My plan is to apply for UBC only this cycle. If UBC doesn't work out, I will apply for US schools next cycle since that give me more time to prepare for US application and send my application ASAP once it's opened.

madflossin, I go to UBC too, so it's good know I can check out the guide u mentioned.
