theDifferential
Currently an IM resident thinking of going into GIM and work in the community. Hows the lifestyle? Is it realistic to work in your 50s/60s as a community GIM doc given how intense working schedule can be? (burden of being MRP, call requirements etc). Im just scared that I will be burnt out and/or if I cant take this physically anymore. What do older docs end up doing in the second half of their careers? Thanks
GIMPCx
A GIM schedule in the community is as hard as you want to make it. If you want to kill yourself and work 20 nights a month you can. If you want to work minimally you can. The hospital and government will let you work everyday if you want which is what makes it so amazing. If you work in a larger urban area you will do a combination of MRP and ER work and clinic. MRP doesn’t pay great but it’s not that hard by comparison. Clinic can pay well as it’s all new consults in urgent care. ER work depends on time and volume. A bit ER can pay 4-6k for an overnight. most people start off working as much as they can and scale back as they get older. There is always a young hungry grad willing to take call off older folks. futureGP
MRP work will probably never go away even in your 50-60s if you plan to work as full time. In your 50-60s, you may get off night schedule but I would doubt you can negotiate out of weekend schedule. Or you could become the deptchief and run the show and make your own rules
