Are there any special programs that people would recommend for those interested in volunteering internationally?

And for those who have gone to volunteer internationally, what did you think of the experience and where did you look for such opportunities?

Hey Angelussum,

There are so many organizations out there that have some really great programs. It depends on what you want to do, where you want to go, whether you want to volunteer with a group, and how much you want to pay. I volunteered with Youth Challenge International (http://www.yci.org) in Guyana in 2002. This organization has a number of places they go and varried lengths. I worked with a team of Canadians, Australians and Guyanese. We were in a couple of really rural areas in the interior of Guyana (population ~200 people). We did a variety of things: bridge building, road construction, HIV/AIDS awareness, literacy training for kids, teacher training etc. It was an amazing experience.

This fall I'm volunteering in Nepal with Volunteer Abroad (http://www.volunteerabroad.ca). This will be an individual placement and I will live with a local family. I will be volunteering in a local clinic doing anything they need me to do, including first aid training. This organization has trips that leave almost every month and you can stay from 5-20wks.

There are also Canadian International Development Agency (http://www.acdi-cida.gc.ca/) youth internships that offer placements in a number of different countries in a number of different fields and they have only limited costs involved.

Hope this helps!
