"I’m not a nurse, or an orderly, or a hospital volunteer.

I can’t magically cure you, or sign your prescription, or write you a note to get off work.

I pay tuition and accumulate debt. I don’t collect some big paycheque.

And no, I don’t know Dr. Tom, Dick, or Harry from the middle of @#%$ nowhere Ontario, but I hope their CMPA dues are paid up.

 

I have a consultant, not a paying employer.

I write my chart notes in English and medical shorthand, not random chicken scratches.

And my name isn’t “Gyne” or “Ortho” or “Medicine.” I have a name. Stop calling me “Hey, are you Gyne?”

 

I can proudly wear the greens I ripped off from the OR.

 

I suffer from inexperience and sleep deprivation.

I’m not an idiot, I’m just post call.

And I believe that the DRE is a truly proud and noble part of the annual physical exam… just as long as I don’t have to do it.

 

Furosemide IS Lasix. A milliliter IS a CC.

And it’s pronounced SENT-A-MEETER, not SON-NA-MEETER… CENTIMETRE!

Clerkship is the third year of medical school, the front line of health care in this city, and the most exhausting but valuable part of my medical education.
