Hello,

The BCMA provides free membership to both the BCMA and the CMA, when you begin medical school in September.

The BCMA will come in - give you a pep talk, "You should be so proud of your future careers as a physician, congratulations....You truly are the brightest and best that BC has to offer...blah blah blah" and then you get free pizza, a backpack, and goodies in that backpack. I think some of the backpacks are stuffed with gift certificates.

Gotta love free stuff :0

If you REALLY don't want to give up $5, what you could do is pay for the membership first, get the free backpack, sell the backpack for $10 or whatever, then you've made $5 and you've got the membership.

Getting the BCMA membership gives you access to MDManagement, which is a CMA subsidiary that has all sorts of financial planning resources, including free consultations/meetings with their financial planners. Yeah, there's a good chance that you have absolutely NO money to do any planning with, but anyone else in your family can also access these services too. I think it's worthwhile to stop in and chat with them at least once, so you know what lies ahead in your financial future as you dig yourself out of the red. MD=More Debt...

You also join the CMA at the same time, and get a free subscription to the CMAJ, which you will, like all the rest of us, will read for the first week or so, and then you'll start accumulating a pile of unopened and unread CMAJ's. But there's often interesting stuff in there, so I think it's nice to have. You'll also get a subscription to the BCMJ (our provincial journal), which is pretty useless, but again, there's the possibility of seeing a neat article in there on the rare occasion. Finally, you get access to all sorts of CMA clinical resources here (various searchable databases for articles, drug resources, specialty journals, etc), although granted, you can get the same things through UBC as well.
