How does U of A calculate prereq GPA?

How does U of A calculate your prereq GPA? Do they use your first year marks (where applicable), or your best mark in each category? (eg if you take 2 semesters of physics in 1st year, and 1 semester of bio-physics in 2nd year, could the mark from the 2nd year course be used instead of one of the first year semesters, if it's a higher mark?)
