waitlists

Has anyone received a letter saying that they are on the waitlist? I have not received anything and so I'm anticipating the worst. I know that acceptances have been given out already so if people have also received letters telling them they are on the waitlist I won't keep hoping for the best. Thanks for the help. :(

I certainly know of people who have been accepted throughout the summer. However, I also know of people this year who have received rejection letters as well. My conclusion is that if you haven't received either (like me as well), there is still an "outside shot" at being admitted. In a post below I mentioned knowing three people last year that were accepted in early August.....

Carse,

Have the people you know have been rejected received their rejections before or after an interview? I spoke to an admissions lady and she said that my application was still being considered. I have no idea what that means because I know other OOP who have been accepted or waitlisted. I'm in the 4th and above OOP group and there are only 6 spots this year while the 2nd/3rd year OOP group have 9 spots to make up the 15 OOP.

What does that mean, still under consideration?

I'm an in-provincer, and I haven't heard anything yet since the interview, so I suspect I may also still be "under consideration".

I think I will call tomorrow...

Why is U of A so damn slow in making decisions?

Peter,

The people that I heard of getting rejections are actually the people that got early interviews in February. Other than that I don't know of anyone else that has been rejected. After spending my undergrad at the U of A I have concluded that they have the WORST administration set-up of ANY med school in Canada.

Cheers!

I just wanted to say that I applied to uofa and have heard nothing whatsoever... i got into ubc med (my first choice being from ubc) so I'm happy. Still, I'm quite disappointed with the Uof A handles applications...

PS. Carse- where are you going then?

tones,

I've heard that U of A doesn't send out rejections until late July for people that weren't even granted an interview! Now that is retarded, I mean the waiting around is bad enough, but if I didn't get an interview and wasn't getting in I'd rather know that as early as possible than being hung out to dry until the end of the summer.

Calgary, by comparison, let people know in February if they did not get an interview, and thus had no chance of acceptance. Even if you did get an interview, you knew by May whether you would be admitted or not (with the exception of those on the waiting list). This at least limits the number of people that are sitting around waiting, rather than having 1,000 applicants not knowing what the hell is going on.

BTW, I'm headed to U of C (off the waiting list) this August. I would have originally preferred U of A (being from Edmonton, etc.), but I a very impressed with the way U of C does things.

Oh, and congrats on getting in at UBC! Good Luck!

Forrest,

The initial acceptances went out May 12th, and they called me on July 3rd. I see above that you are an in-province applicant, which probably means your chances of getting in are better than some OOP, because ALL of the OOP applicants that were interviewed (85 I believe) were placed on a waiting list for 15 spots. Plus bear in mind that when U of A gets off their lazy asses and sends some late acceptances (which I guarentee will happen), there will be a few people in U of C starting to decline.....

Hopefully you'll be at U of C's orientation on Aug 8th. Good Luck!

Carse

P.S. I believe that I too am still "under consideration" since my interview at U of A. >:

Hi Carse,

Congratulations on your acceptance to U of C. If U of A was to accept you, would you still consider them, or have you already completely decided on Calgary?

Either way, please drop me an e-mail at your convenience. I'd like to talk with you about a project for which I could really use your help. mdpremie@yahoo.com

Again, from one long-timer on this board to another, congrats! :hat

Well, I feel about 1% better because I was one of those people interviewed during that week in Feb. Want to hear something crazy...when I phoned U of A, I was told that interviews were still going on. Come on, in mid-July!!! That's why some people haven't heard anything yet, even for interviews...there's a chance they still might get one.

I talked to Marleen Healy at the U of A admissions office today, and she said that ALL letters were now sent out the day before yesterday (Wednesday).

So basically, check your mail today or early next week and we will finally know our fate (unless we're waitlisted...).

There's a polite way of putting it. :\ I guess we'll be seeing you in Calgary then, and graduating a year earlier than everyone else...

Congratulations Carse!!!

I'm glad you got into UofC. I heard so many good things about the programme... I wanted to go there but didn't apply (missed the deadline). I hope things go well... your orientation is so early... when do you finish... maybe after orientation you cane tell us...

later,

tones

PS. I can't believe they're going to send me a letter in july... I believe UBC was the most efficient in getting responses personally...

What I remember feeling after my Calgary interview was that this was a very cool med school. Nice new facilities (loved the BACS center), very cool and down-to-earth med students, interesting sounding program. Loved the idea of a Pass/Fail grading policy.

Looking at it now, the only thing about Calgary that would worry me is the three year program. I had a hell of a time, and still am, trying to decide what I wanted to specialise in. I think deciding early allows you to invest time meeting people in that department, particularly residents and attending physicians, and this opens the door to doing research and such in that area, and actually having enough time to get it published and presented.

Already I don't like the idea of being forced to decide after "only" having a four year curriculum. I don't know what I'd do with a three year program. As a result, if I was at Calgary, I'd want to make sure to put some early weekends in shadowing doctors in different specialties to get a feel for what's out there, and which specialties and specialists fit my personality and life goals.
