MD/PhD Program

So, I'm just curious if anyone else is applying to this program or in this program at the U of A?

You have to write a "letter of intent" and this is something I've never done before. I don't know if it should be personal, for example, talking about how my interest in research and medicine coincide, or if I should just stick to the business end of things, my proposal, how long it will take me to complete, etc. Hell, I don't even know if I should address the letter to the program head and sign it with my signature, or just treat it as a mini-essay.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

<title>GPA Average of “Years Completed” ??</title>

<pagetext>The U. of A. web site, as quoted below, says that you can drop a year from the GPA calculation if you have completed four or more years. I am in a four year program and hoped to drop my first year out of the average but now I realize that this must mean four or more years completed at the time of application which would mean I will have only completed three years at the time of application in November 1 and that I can’t drop my first year marks. Have I got this right? See quote from U. of A. web site below.

If I have a bad year, will it be used in the GPA calculation?

The GPA is calculated on all undergraduate university course work you have ever done with the exception of applicants who have completed four or more years of university. For applicants with four or more years of completed university work, the admissions cumulative academic average is calculated with the deletion of the lowest annual average, provided it is not the most recent completed year, or the one and only year where 30 units of course weight (five full course equivalents) have been completed.

<title>I.B. credits - how are marks assigned ?</title>

<pagetext>I completed the International Baccalaureate program in high school and have an I.B. credit for English that I am relying on for the U. of A. prerequisite course requirements. I am clear on the fact that U. of A. will recognize the credit but unclear on exactly what mark they will put in the calculation of the prerequisite average given that I.B. gives you a mark from 1-7 and I have a 6 which is supposed to cover a equivalent mark range of 84% - 97%. Does anyone know how they handle I.B. marks in the crunching of the GPA “prerequisite course” numbers? I need to make a judgment on whether I should upgrade or stand pat. Thanks for any info and advice.

<title>Prerequisite Course Upgrading</title>

<pagetext>I am completing a first year full course in physics. My mark could be a bit higher especially considering it is going to be included in the prerequisite course average. I understand that I can have this mark replaced in the prerequisite course average calculation if I take a higher-level course and get a higher mark. My problem is a full 6.00 credit course is not offered that I can take with my first year course as a prerequisite. There is a half course (3.00 credit) available. If I take the half course and get a higher mark will my prerequisite average be calculated using the higher-level half course for 3.00 credits and the first year course for the other 3.00 credits or would I need to take a 6.00 credit course to achieve the upgrade? Will they automatically accept a course if it has the first year course as a prerequisite or do they “evaluate” the courses before approving them? I am at Queen’s and considering Physics 214 – Planets and Life for the upgrade. Any advice would be appreciated.
