Why Long Residency hours?

I have a question regarding residence. Why are the hours so long? Don't you get sleep deprived and wouldn't that impair our judgement and hence making you a “not so good” doctor, because you’d be prone to making more mistakes? I don’t get it. 48 hour shift! Or even just 24 hours ….that just not healthy. You’d think a doctor would know that!!!
