Which one for DENT: UWO, UofT or USask?????

hi there,

I'm on the waiting list for UWO, UofT, and USask. I'm sure they are making their final cuts by now. But as I am waiting anxiously, I'm still confused as to which of the three schools have the best program. I heard USask does a good job of preparing Students for 'real' dental work, but is it better that UofT or UWO?

What are your guys' thoughts?

Thanks;)

I accepted to Sask, so obviously I'll tell you that it's the best. Actually... I haven't seen the others, but I don't think that you can go wrong with Sask. I've talked to a oral surgeon and he says that he likes Sask because they have great dentists come out of there. (He didn't go there in case you're wondering) Like I said, you can't go wrong with Sask (although a little pricey)

So.. Sask is really that good (i heard of its good rep too)

I'm waitlisted at Uwo.. and holdin out some hope.. i dunno... im really happy with Sask, impressed with what I saw there, and the new gym is cool. Maybe I should just forget U-dub and chill at sask

Only reason I would consider Uwo (and the only reason I am wondering about waitlist movement there) is because of the city vs Saskatoon. Although I think it is what you make of it. You can have a terrible time anywhere if you're a grouch and feel awesome in a less desirable place if you want it to be

Tough decisions... I dont want to do any apartment huntin till I know fo sure where im goin.

What's better or worse is in the eye of the beholder. Let's face it all those schools are accredited and have their own strengths. The question is what school you think you would best fit into. For this you need to explore the program offered by each school. For example, how are the clinicals, is it dent/med combined, time off in the summers, expenses etc.

Some schools are more expensive than others and some have better clinics....which one do you want? Hopefully you get a choice between those schools and are pulled off the waitlist. I am waitlisted only at Sask as its one of the two schools i applied to.

Move Waitlist and Good LUCK!

Go with the one that would give you the most clinical experience. Do they have enough patients for their clinics for you to work on a regular basis? Weather is the second consideration. Oh yes, UT is first rate for their clinics and teaching.

The one great thing about U Sask is that they don't have a specialty program. Thus, whereas most schools would ship the challenging cases to the specialist students, you will have a chance to work on the "tough" cases. Thumbs up in my book.

I have several friends who graduated from U of T and they all tell me that Western focuses more on the clinical aspect of dentistry, which I what I look for in a program, and U of T is more theoretical. You may have also noticed that U of T has 200 additional hours of lecture in 1st and 2nd year. Perhaps this is where they get the idea that U of T is more "theoretical".

UT works their students hard at clinics and no lack of patients.

More lecture hours does not translate into less clinicals. It is good if the school has specialties unless you are dead set against being a specialist yourself one day. Specialty spots are typically few and competitive, except for peds which no one really wants.

NYU, which I know of, does not have enough patients for their students. You graduate as a dentist, but not necessarily one with enough experience to start working.

This is just what I was told by a NYU graduate.

Manitoba dent program is very good from what I was told.
