Guest ofienefie
Consider this scenario. Is it possible for sombody who got a match through CARMS and is in a residency program to reapply to the CARMS iteration again. The scenario that I am thinking about is for a doctor who is in the PGY2 program in Family Medicine in Canada and just about to finish next June. Can such a person reapply to the CARMS iteration for the 2005-06 year for another specialty which will begin next July. Is there anybody who have ever done such a thing before. Guest moo
Yes, but I believe not in the first round in most provinces. Thus you will be relegated to the leftover spots in the second round. However, you CAN obtain spots outside of the match (if you get funding) and this is the more common route by which people obtain re-entry positions. Guest Ian Wong
This is pretty much dead on. Once you have started residency training, you are no longer eligible to match in the first round of CaRMS. As a result, your specialty choices and locations are going to be severely limited. It may be an easier pathway to find external funding (ie. a return of service contract with a particular community), or to try and transfer into a different residency program (although that can be tricky secondary to funding issues; if you transfer, the program that gets you needs to make sure they have funding to support you first, for all the years that are needed to finish out your new residency).
