Question about IM subspecialties

I wanted to know if anyone knew the competition within Internal Medecine to get the subspecialties spots. I know that Cardiology is pretty hard to get into but what about Gastro, Nephro, Hematology, etc... I can't find that info.

Thanks

I haven't found anything substantial myself. . . just rumours about how competitive IM programs can be if everyone's shooting for the next subspecialty.

Wish I could tell you, but I don't know. I do believe that GI and Cards are by quite a wide margin the two hardest IM subspecialties to enter. GI has an awful lot of procedures in the average work-week, and this makes it a fairly lucrative area to work in.

As an aside, nephro docs are some seriously smart individuals; I give major props to anyone with the brain-power and knowledge base to become a nephrologist.

Yep - I've heard the same thing as well. I've heard that this is one of those specialties that new surgical techniques (ie endoscopy) have cut procedure time down markedly, but the billing codes haven't exactly been updated - meaning that Gastroenterologists can book many more procedures, at the same billing rate per procedure, during the same time. I've heard the same thing is true for a few other specialties. . . one of the fourth years called these specialties "one horse ponies" as the earning potential was based on a few limited procedures whose billing fees haven't been updated.

An interesting question though - do you think this trend will continue in these specialties? Or will the billing codes be updated eventually? And what happens to all the specialists who struggled to get into these specialties if the billing code is changed?
