Just a few questions

Recommended Posts

Hello, I am Quebec born and have lived in Ontario for the past four years.

I will be attending University of Toronto where I will be recieving a BSc and BA in French.

Anyways a few ways a few questions.

1- How many credits do I need to apply considering I did not do CEGEP. Keeping in mind that at UofT I get 5 credits every year. I credit for a full year and 0.5 for a half year credit.

2-Does it matter if pre-reqs are done in summer.

3- I would be an in-province right?

4- Average GPA.

Hi tmacgirl,

1. Since you did not do cegep, I believe you will be needing your bachelors to be admitted (as what I heard from 2 fellow classmates who received a BSc in the USA). However, my gf was admitted at Laval following one year of biochem (and no cegep, came straight from Vietnam), and since all Quebec schools have similar prereqs, it may be possible to be admitted before completion of your degree (she is an international student, and has quite an exceptional record, so it may not necessarily apply to anyone else...)

2. Having personally done 1 prereq during summer, I don't think Sherbrooke will care when you did it, as long as it was done.

3. Being born in Quebec, you should be in-province. This however is not determined by Sherbrooke, but rather by the Quebec government.

4. Ah, what a question. Sherbrooke, as does Laval and Montreal, do not use your GPA score out of 4 for admissions. Your GPA is converted is what is called a "Cote de rendement universitaire" or Cote R, which basically goes from five to 40-50. The cote R is simply a Z score (see any statistical manual) adjusted in order to count the force of your group (dentistry counts more than philosophy...) So, basically you must have an excellent GPA, and you must be significantly higher than average, and your group must be pretty strong. Since the R score varies for different programs and universities, it's near impossible to say what yours will be like. However, on OMSAS, I'd say a 3.85 could be considered competitive (however, once again, in some programs, admissions will be impossible even with a perfect GPA). Also, as a University student, be aware that there are only 27 spots available, and nearly a thousand apply for these spots, so it's pretty difficult to be admitted (but not impossible).

To see an example of R score for Laval (only place that publishes this info):
