DentistWannaBe
For carving, I am at the stage where I just to practice on speed, smoothing, and accuracy. I am thinking of buying "12 pack - desgin Book 1 combo" for $53 from http://www.predentlab.ca/more.htm for further practice Do you think their soaps are good for somone who just need to work on speeds, smoothing, and accuracy? How about the design book. Are they accurate representations of the real DAT? I have the IQ design book and it sucked. Thanks!

Get the real soap from the CDA.
DentistWannaBe
well, are you saying the "Design book" is no better than IQ publication? or the soap is no better? Or both? Thanks!

The book is no better than the IQ book, and there is nothing better than the real soap from the CDA.
DentistWannaBe
I bought the IQ carving design book, but all the sample designs do not simulate what we actually see on the real exam. And the chalk from IQ is too brittle. I don't want to get them if predent lab materials are like IQ's. I actually want designs that resemble to the real DAT. omizu
I would disagree -- the carving designs that are available for sale are pretty good representations of what you might find on the actual DAT. You may not practice the exact pattern that you'll be tested on, but if you try all the designs you will almost definitely have attempted all of the possible cuts. The point is to practice carving, not to practice the exact design because you have no idea what it will be.

wishywish82
i wrote the DAT twice last year and the carving design was very similar both times. overall the more stuff you can carve the better.
DentistWannaBe
since some ppl said IQ design book was helpful, I noticed design #7, #9, and #10 have weird shape end (pointy triangle, round end, and mushroom end) Do those deisgn actually appear on the real dat. I know more practice is better. I just want to save time avoid carving shapes we will never see on the exam. thanks!
