Keeping the sketch short means that it does what it's supposed to do: act as a quick summary of what you've done to provide cues for interviews, etc. And fit on one or two printed pages. The essay is your place to expand on what you've done! And, yeah, I felt the same way as you when I was writing my application (as opposed to reading other people's apps...)
