Guest roy8686
can ontario university graduates apply to med schools such as UBC, dalhousie etc.? Do they prefer internal candidates more then external ones?
Guest ojasod
Yes, Ontario grads can apply to universities outside of Ontario. Most med schools have reserved a very limited number of spots for out-of-province applicants. Generally speaking, out-of-province applicants usually require a higher GPA/overall profile than in-province applicants to be considered for an interview. Guest blinknoodle
But attending an Ontario university does not necessarily change your residency... whether you are in-province or out-of-province usually depends on where you grew up, but I think the definitions vary from province to province. Guest aneliz
You can apply to any med school in Canada from any university in Canada. However, there are often 'residency' restrictions. Meaning, that most schools reserve most of their seats for 'in province' students. UBC and Dalhousie both have very limited seats (and very high competition) for out of province students. Your province of residency is not usually based on where you did your undergrad degree... ie: going to Dal for undergrad will not make you an 'in province' applicant. Your province of residency is usually based on the following: 1. The province you graduated from high school in 2. The province your parents are living in 3. The province your spouse lives in 4. The province that you have lived continuously in (ie not leaving for the summer) for at least 2 years.
Guest roy8686
im a immigrant and havent attended a high school in canada, but I do have an Ontario health card, does that make me a ontario resident?
Guest aneliz
It should. It wouldn't make you a BC resident!
Guest violetk
Check out McMaster residency requirements: to be considered as an in-province candidate you have to have lived in Ontario for 3 years.
Guest Agent999
for those requirements of residency, is it any one of them or all of the above?? is there a site or place that gives the definite requirements??
Guest 007
Agent999, you should examine each individual school's requirements as they are different. Dalhousie changed their residency requirements as of the application cycle that is just ending. Now students who went to Dal for undergrad are not necessarily considered Maritime applicants. It is more dependent on where your parents live, unless you are considered independent and have been living and working in the Maritimes for a certain period of time. This is likely somewhat different from how UBC, or any of the other non-Ontario schools determine residency status.
