Community Medicine

Are there any community medicine residents here who can give us their perspective on community med and the residency program? I am currently in an area that does not have a Medical Officer of Health, and have been considering doing the community med residency in addition to family med. I understand that most programs allow you to obtain your FM plus your Community med certification.

Thanks,

I think that all the English language programs have the option to do your FM plus community med. The Royal College only requires 1 clinical year, 1 academic year, and the appropriate months of rotations in CM. In most programs the clinical year is usually family medicine based. Some programs make it a default, and you have to opt out if you don't want CCFP, and some make you opt in.

I think you'll find that many residents in CM like to complete the CCFP for security (there will always be jobs for family docs), but many don't end up practicing as a family physician because of time constraints. Also, in most provinces, once you qualify as a community med specialist you are licensed to practice clinical medicine in your area of competency. This allows CM specialists to have focused clinical practices in their area of interest (often a vulnerable population.)

If you have an interest in population health and prevention, definitely check out community medicine as a potential career! You can have the potential to influence health on a large scale, long term basis, and still have a clinical practice (great for immediate gratification :) ) if you choose. Although you may not have day to day interaction with patients, you work with a multidisciplinary team, so 'people skills' are very important. Residency is still hard work, but much more balanced than many other specialties.

umza, i believe, is a PGY-1 community medicine resident. she chose to go through the FM route as well. try PMing her and i'm sure she'll be able to answer your questions better.

Ah, shot down on my first post. Oh well - so much for trying to help. Good luck with your search for info, RualDoc. I hope you find that community med looks interesting and will give an elective a try. We need more community med specialists.

Hey, sorry if it sounded like a shut down...I just know that umza also knows about CM. I'm sure the OP appreciated (or will appreciate) your info.
