med hopeful
I've read that it's better to ask for the interviewer name if you have forgotten it, say sorry, what was your name again? than to just say "you" - if you have a specific question at the end of the interview, but if you got it in the intro, is it safe to say you've been rejected if you have to ask for it at the end of the 45 min interview if you've forgotten it? I mean, if you're building a rapport - u need to remember the people's names, this must be a sign of disrespect, stupidity and downright forgetfulness which are not qualities of a doc... on the other side, the interview is stressful, cognitively overloading and tough, maybe getting a name clarification says you care to know, and asking a specific question means you try to engage the person... Any thoughts? This ever happen to anyone?
Athina021
Hi hopeful, I used to be really embarassed because I could never remember the interviewer's names five minutes after introductions. The interview specialist at my school's career centre said it was perfectly fine to ask again, as you suggested, if you can't remember. I don't think the interviewers will hold it against you if you don't remember and I do think that if you ask again, it's a sign of caring about your rapport with them. They know the interview is very stressful and that memory tends to be affected during periods of stress. If possible, ask the interviewers' names when you check in. I did this year at Ottawa, and I remembered their names once I was in the situation. This isn't possible at every school but it is helpful if you know ahead of time. I wouldn't worry too much about this, just make sure to be confident, positive and coherent!
med hopeful
Thanks so much! I have been really nervous about it happening - I suppose I should try to get them and memorize them
daryn
At my last interview, they told me their names very quickly (and some names are not very easy to remember or even replicate). I tried glancing at their name tags but they were hidden (the clip board and clothes were in the way) and I didn't want to stare for too long! Panama
What do you think is worse? Not catching their names when they say it and then just not using it when you say your goodbye or asking it at the end of the interview?
Lactic Folly
I wouldn't worry too much about this - it would be quite harsh of an interviewer to conclude that someone is stupid or disrespectful based solely on either of these two actions (and I don't think one is worse than another, though as another poster stated, asking their name in a sincere, apologetic manner does show you care). But as part of a pattern, that would be different.. it's all about the overall impression you make.
mrgreek
If you don't remember at the end...why would u even try saying bye with their name, or asking again? saying thanks without the name is not acceptable? lol
KennethToronto
If you don't remember at the end...why would u even try saying bye with their name, or asking again? saying thanks without the name is not acceptable? lol Knowing the name of the interviewer, especially for MMI, is irrelevant. A) There would be too many names! Just as easy to get through the 8 minutes without using their name and still being polite.
mrgreek
even in a 45 minute interview,,,,what r u gonna say "thnx, goodbye rob, erin, mike" that sounds worse to me than "goodbye, thnx for your time"
tallguy408
DO NOT WORRY ABOUT THE NAME THING. Half the time, we don't remember your name either, unless we look at your name tag or the eval sheets. We know how stressed out you are. Good luck! Word. Dr.Cave
Try deducing minutia of the interviewers personalities using your keen powers of observation to cover up for the fact that you forgot their names. You:" I see you are a keen gardner who fancies lilies" Interviewer:"Wha??? how did you..." You:"You have a small amount of potting soil lodged under the nails of your index and middle finger of your right hand, as if you had recently been potting bulbs. The is a slight smudge on your tie the colour of lily pollen - which is nototiously sticky. In all likelhood the smudge happend as you leaned in to smell your lilies before you left home this morning and from the faint aroma I noticed in the room upon entering I would guess it to be Lilium tigrinum, the tiger lily." Smurfette
In all my interviews last year, I doubt I used any of their names. A pleasant, "Thanks for interviewing me. Have a nice day" is perfectly acceptable.
Superking25
I used all three of their names as I left. But to be fair, they used my name first. They each shook my hand as I left and said "Thanks, Ian". And I said "Thank you, X", through the three of them, and then said "Thank you for having me, take care" after saying that.
