ikant100
Hi I'm deciding where to do a neurology elective (I'm not planning on going into neuro, I just want to get the most valuable experience). Which neuro program is the best in Canada? Thanks.

juicyprunes
I did a neurology elective a U of A - it's well organized and offers a very good exposure to neuro. It consists of 1 week of general and 1 week of stroke - both tend to be busy services - opportunities to see consults, do lots of neuro exams, and plenty of teaching. Guest success100
Hey...Just wondering what job opportunities are like in neurology (ie shortage vs saturated?) Anyone have any ideas? Depends where you work.I know that in rural regions, neurologists along with all other professionals are in demand. They have pretty much the same opportunities as dermatologists, endocrinologists and other specialties, which are very decent. If you run a private practice, you could end up making more than public. You will never starve as a Neurologist,if you decide to go into NeuroSurgery, don't even think about it.If you like it,go for it.
Satsuma
If you want to work in an academic centre, you will need at least 1 fellowship to get the position. Neurologists are a pretty academic bunch. However, if you want to work in a community-type setting, then no fellowship required.
boodog
how do others view the sort of lifestyle that neurology has to offer...i've seen an 8-5 monday to friday sort of deal with some house calls, what has been others experience?
Lactic Folly
I've seen some who are more community/office-based and some who are more academic/hospital-based.. One general community neurologist would work 8-6 on weekdays and spend one afternoon per week seeing consults at the community hospital. At the academic centre, the neurologists rotate on the call schedule, covering CTU, urgent neurology clinic, and citywide call at night (so would be responsible for admissions/inpatients, emergency consults, and stroke protocol patients). When not on service, they would run their own clinics/research.
