In_Valid
I've never applied to UBC and am a bit out of my element. What sort of stats do you need to have to have a reasonable chance of being admitted. Keep in mind that I am OOP applicant. I just want to know if I am wasting my time or not. Thanks! kiwi
Overall average of 85% or higher will get you 25/25 on the AQ score.
Jixe
As an OOP, you should definitely have an 85%+ to apply to get the full AQ marks. Getting the NAQ points is the tough part. It's another 25 marks, and you need a combined ~42/50 to get an interview as an OOP.
OneDay
how do they treat MSc students with the AQ score, any extra points?
In_Valid
you guys don't do GPA over there? hrmm lol its seems so foreign haha. I'm from Ontario. What sort of MCAT requirements do you have? What is AQ/NAQ? These terms are unfamiliar to me.
Jixe
you guys don't do GPA over there? hrmm lol its seems so foreign haha. I'm from Ontario. What sort of MCAT requirements do you have? What is AQ/NAQ? These terms are unfamiliar to me. UBC doesn't really care for the MCAT. It's a flag in the post-interview process. AQ = academic score. >85% average = 25/25 NAQ = non-academic score. As an OOP with a perfect AQ you would need at least 17/25 NAQ to get an interview (42/50 total). I believe as an IP with a a perfect AQ you would need 11/25 NAQ to get an interview (36/50 total). Again, I'm not too sure about the IP total, but it is significantly lower. Keep in mind that virtually every OOP applicant has a perfect AQ score, so stakes are extremely high for extra-curricular involvement. I've applied twice unsuccessfully due to my NAQ score. Just search for NAQ to read more about how tough it is to get these points. Their website has more information in regards to how these points are awarded. The application is fairly lengthy, so if you're willing to put in the time, go for it. Though I do recommend you take a look at the accomplishments of other successful and unsuccessful applicants to somewhat gauge your NAQ score. In_Valid
does research experience fall under NAQ?
Jixe
I threw all mine under the employment category. No one is quite sure how much employment counts for. It's tough if you were a job/research-whore like me You should take a look at the UBC Medicine admissions site.
In_Valid
I took a look. My AQ should be 25/25. I'm a tad sketched out by my NAQ though. I spent all of my summers during Uni in research labs. I suppose I should have been volunteering in some third world country. >< It seems like the MCAT is pretty worthless at UBC. The average entering MCAT was 30. In Ontario, its like 35 (there are strict cutoffs). It doesn't seem like they take it into consideration at all. In_Valid
hmm I just looked at their prereqs. They require a full year of biochem? that's pretty steep. I have half a credit of biochem. I've taken medicinal chemistry which is biochemesque. I'll have to ask. How stringent do you think they will be on that? Jixe
Call them. I'm from Ontario and they had a list of courses that were eligible for the the biochemistry prerequisite.
rocky222
What if your cumulative is slightly under 85% (ex. 84%)? Anyone know what the drop off is like after the 25/25 score? One mark per percent?
