Since this thread seems to be about clothes...

is there any difference between a suit for like 200-300 at mexx, le chateau or sears (ralph lauren, protocol, haggar, van heusen)?

Any stores I've missed in this range? Any great sales?

I should have done this on boxing day...

i thought you didn't give a crap about suits and dressing up.

mine cost <$100. it's actually not a suit. the fabrics of my blazer and pants look close enough. (but i guess for men, the top and pants have to match more exactly; iunno) my entire outfit, including blazer, pants, shirt and shoes, costs about $200 after tax.

le chateau is probably too trendy (the not good kind of trendy, almost clubbing-like. too many unnecessary details on their clothes). i never walk into le chateau when i shop because i like wearing regular jeans and chuck taylors.

i think you missed banana republic, tristan america, club monaco (is it more expensive?), esprit (is it for women only?), RW&Co, zara, the bay and more.

[edit] and H&M. just don't go for the weird designs and butt/thigh huggers. and moores. and http://www.tiptop.ca/html/suits.php

you can wear a jumpsuit because that's a suit too.

I agree, stay away from Le Chateau or your outfit will fall apart after one washing. :P truffle mentioned Banana Republic, which is where I will look for a woman's suit, but their stuff is pretty expensive but very good quality and will last you a long time. I think Sears has been having loads of sales lately, so you might want to check them out soon. You might be able to get some good stuff at the Gap (blazers, dress shirts, etc).

Don't go by store, go by brand. Ralph lauren never hurt anybody. Also, careful with the suits from mexx. I buy a lot of clothes from there, but a lot of it is geared to fashion/partyware.

Also consider Moore's. It might be in your price range and has decent stuff for it.

Avoid Stars (at all costs), le chateau, and in some cases, TIP TOP (However you may want to make an exception for TIP TOP if you run out of options).

I bought my suit (Mexx) for 95$ on boxing day when two weeks before I would have bought it for >175$, so I saved a lot that day, but since thats no longer an option, try going to department stores!

I bought the same suit I found in the mexx store for half the cost at the bay that day! I was actually in the line ready to buy the suit when my mom called me from the bay and told me to get over there because she had a suit, and she was actually holding the same one lol

Anyways, Club Monoco is one of my favorite stores but wayyy too expensive, especially for suits. Banana has good sales every so often, so its worth a shot. Try Tommy Hilfiger, they also have good sales, when they do have them. Otherwise, you could also try Jacob. (unless you're a guy?)

Personally, for men, I love walking by Hugo Boss :D

my god banana republic is so expensive! I walked in once, looked at a pricetag and walked out.

Department stores are generally the way to go for suit and stuff if you don't care too much about being super fashionable.

I don't know about you guys, but I want to create the image that I'm ready to be a physician.

Thus, I'm wearing a labcoat and I just purchased a stethoscope to hang around my neck for the interviews.

I also plan on storming out of the room mid-interview when I've planned my beeper to go off.

+++++

In all seriousness, I come from a smaller city that lacks most of the stores mentioned above (but we have a Moores).

As a guy, I guess I can't cause too much damage with just a standard dark navy suit + snappy tie.

I found this helpful for the MMI interview http://www.topstarinterview.com MMI package. Looks pretty sweet to me.

I'm in Kitchener and registering for this http://www.topstarinterview.com/page29.html if anyone else wants to go and carpool let me know!

I'm clueless in terms of clothing but this seems like a pretty good guide for the MMI to me: http://www.topstarinterview.com -> MMI package. I'm loving it!

You love it because it was a helpful guide, or you love it because you run the company and make money from it?

Let's see:

  • the owner of the company is Alexander Wishart (note the similarity to your username)
  • said person completed a MSc in pharm, as did wishywish82
  • said person is a student in Dal dental school, as is wishywish82

If you have a great product, it should be selling itself. Makes you wonder about the testimonials posted on your website when you pull stuff like this.

If I happen to be wrong, please let me know, and I'd be happy to offer an apology.

Glad I'm not the only one who checked the post history on this guy.

I have no problem with having a regular poster come clean and tell ppl he's started a business and wants to encourage us, his peers, to check it out, but I really hate all this "undercover" advertising ****.

WOW this is a beautiful callout. Nicely done Laika.

Usually I do not jump the gun, but I am going to here. I am with Laika; I can apologize later if I am wrong.

WISHYWISH82 - How dare you pose as an applicant and customer of a program you profit from and started? How dare you come on premed101 and prey on pre-professional students and their desires for acceptance into professional schools?

I actually hit the link and read your bio and looked at your products. While I am confident that I do not need your weak material for an interview edge I have some disposable income and I considered purchasing some MMI materials "just to see." Well, I no longer want to support your company, nor do I think materials prepared by a charlatan would be good preparation for any situation.

If I am wrong I will look foolish and none of this will bother you so I don't mind saying it.

We await your response...

PS - You are a turd-burglar.

I always knew Dental students were all about the money.

Good job Laika.

What about skirt? Obviously not short skirt, but those office women are wearing - black, to the knee, with a nice suit-like jacket on top.

I think a fitted skirt to just below the knee w/ heels looks really chic and would probably be totally acceptable. I haven't been to med interviews but if you are comfortable in that, then I don't see why not.

Skirt suits are definitely acceptable. In fact, in the olden days (like early 90s), it was the pantsuits that had people wondering whether they were acceptable - women were generally expected to wear skirt suits at med interviews. Just mind the weather. I'm not yet sure what I'm gonna wear this year, but I might wear a skirt.

that rule makes no sense whatsoever. how is a skirt more professional than a pair of slacks in medicine? it's not like female doctors all sit behind a desk all day without any possibility of those oops moments.

I'm pretty sure you guys would whine about me advertising or getting my web developer to do so under my old name. Either way I wrote a book about the CDA interview process for interviewing potential dental students, it worked for me when I got in as I got into all 4 schools I got interviews at.

Last year friends of mine used it for this MMI interview that medicine has started to develop and they got in also. Now this could all be good luck and we could all just have been good applicants but I'd like to think there's a trend.

Either way one of my profs who developed the CDA dental interview is now being hired out as a consultant for MMI interview development since there's a huge degree of similarity between the 2. So much of a similarity he advised me to enter the MMI market as well. Anyway I'm sure people will moan and cry about advertising on the forums but it's a free country guys - today I got 4 viagra emails and 2 saying I could save money by importing prescription drugs from Canada all advertising and I just chose to ignore them and delete them. All I'm after is for people to know my products exist, I advertise on google and facebook too but I figured I'd drop a few comments on the forum and see how it ends up. I'm sorry if anyone is offended by my message.

Oh and for dress just generally look professional, it's doubtful your sense of style will be burnt into the interviewers memory they'll likely interview 30-40 applicants that day. Suits for the fellas, skirts & blouses or suits for the ladies and don't dope up too heavy on the scents.
