Salary in General Surgery?

Recommended Posts

Hey everybody!

I was just wondering if anyone knows how much General Surgeons make on average?

I've heard around 300,000+. But I've also heard that Internists make 300,000.....and if that's true then that doesn't follow the general rule of "procedures pay"

Thanks!

Hi there,

You can have a look in the BC book of physician reimbursements to see the salary ranges of the various specialties per year. When I did an elective in gen surg in Vancouver I worked with one of the higher billing general surgeons there, and he was making $600-700K per year. Mind you, he also performed scopes and ERCPs 2 days per week which would certainly help to bump his collections.

Cheers,

Kirsteen

Surgical Salaries/billings are tough to interpret as people's expenses vary. I bill quite high, however I have a full time secretary and part time nurse who's salaries I have to pay. I also run an office and have to pay for office rent and expenses. Compare that to a salaried position in an academic centre where the secretary, clinic space, etc is included. Hard to figure out who makes more!

Best not to go into surgery for the money - it's really not worth it in the end. If it's money you're after then do an MBA.

internists actually can make quite a bit of money especially in community hospital settings. in general the rule that procedures pay still holds because in these settings, internists can often be found doing alot of the procedures that a GI, or Cardio, or other subspecialty would otherwise do.

I think it really depends on your centre and whether you are salary or not. I have heard that in Halifax they are generally on salary at around $400,000 +. I have also heard of smaller communities in Ontario where salaries can exceed $700,000/yr.

the more metropolitan the centre, the less you are likely to earn (due to competition/ not enough patients to go around/ not as much call/ specialists doing procedures you might otherwise do in a smaller centre/ more metropolitan lifestyle/ etc) but 350K is still pretty much typical (note that this is before overhead), and the same applies to all figures stated above in previous posts (with the exception of people who are salaried and not on FFS)
