The difference is one is an award ($4500 plus extra paid by your prof) and the other is a real job. Adcoms don't 'prefer' anything, so do whatever you want. I'd advise against trying to fit a certain mold because it will be painfully obvious that you are trying to do so. Do what you want to do and do it to your full potential.
