thatonekid
Hurt my back really bad. Hurts to turn my head or bend down to pick something up. All I can do is wait for it to get better Ouch. You should get it looked at.
leap87
Haha, you caught that eh? Only a little jab. Meant more in jest than anything. Although, I've read some very disparaging comments from chiropractors in the US talking about how much of a quack science it is and how disappointed they are that they got into it in the first place. Personally, I'm open to it... I haven't utilized their services as I haven't felt the need yet, but I know others that swear by it. I'd be a little hesitant to let somebody adjust my neck... What I was really trying to say was my philosophy is to go see a doctor first as the family physician should be frontline. Then, based on how that goes I would move forward with either chiro, neuro, massage, pt... etc. Not to sound rude or anything, but your family physician might know jack-**** about someone's spine and what is bothering them. Over the past couple of months, I have been witnessing an increasing number of people coming into our lab so that we can take a look at their spine, because their family physicians have written them off and told them basically they can't help them. To top it all of, their family physician decided to prescribe some pills and tell them not to move much and not to do what is aggravating the condition (how the hell would a patient know what is going to aggravate the condition when they don't understand the spine!!!!) Yes, I'm not saying that there aren't any crooked chiros out there but there are some VERY good ones (like the ones in our lab), who can fix your back and take a look at it. It might be a disc herniation for all you know. Besides if you know your clinic well, the patient won't even need to tell you where the pain is and what is bothering them because you'll be able to tell just based on touch and the way they move. I don't even need to touch someone's back to know it's a disc herniation. It drives me a bit insane when people say something against other disciplines. I can start picking on surgeons who have taken out the wrong organ (and it happens more often than you think in USA)... wonder where that discussion will lead us My point is that health needs a multidisciplinary approach. Hence why I chose not to go into medicine.... Intermission: If you're in the Toronto/Waterloo/Kitchener area and need a good chiro, you're free to PM me. Hence why I choose not to go into medicine.... I always find it amusing when people start off with the statement: not to sound rude or anything, but... and then blast away. My original quote was a semi joke- I'm glad you are willing to stand up for chiros, but I wasn't saying anything against it. In fact, I stated that I was open to it, but hesitant to let somebody adjust my neck if that was what they wanted to do. A lot of people have their hate on for chiros... I don't. I've never used one. My family physician is absolutely stellar- not paternalistic or patronizing. He was the one who found my fiancee's leukemia, diagnosed my damaged nerve and has helped with various other ailments. Health does need a multidsciplinary approach, I agree with you 100%. I'd go to my family physician first because the dude is amazing and isn't afraid to refer off to pt, rmt, chiro, specialists, hospitals, accupuncture. I'd also do some research on any potential practitioners that would be working on my body as the spine is pretty important. My benefits don't cover pt, rmt etc. so I'd see my family physician first to see if it was necessary to shell out the dough... I'm not sure why you included the fact that it might be a disc herniation... I wasn't commenting on what it might be, just how I would approach the situation given my current benefits, relationship with my physician, complete lack of experience with chiros etc. Anyways, you raised some excellent points and that's what this place is for. Let's hope that Intermission gets better.

Edit: I mentioned disc herniation because people don't even realize when they actually sustain one - even though it hurts like a biatch.

Apixaban85
Anyone know of any summer research scholarships that you can apply for if you have a university-affiliated supervisor willing to take you in a non-medical biology research field? Most of the ones I'm finding are dedicated solely to medical research or hospital-only research with the exception of NSERC USRA

leap87
When you think everything is failing and everything around you is falling apart, people like my 2 supervisors come to save the day. I think I can very well say that I'm blessed to have these 2 people in my life. Ethics is going to be submitted tonight. I have 3 co-op students, 1 tech person, 1 volunteer, 1 post-doc and 2 supervisors helping with a project. Not only that, I have the most incredible designer ever who can make something out of nothing (quite literally). I imagine something and he just makes it happen. Wow... what a team and project this is. I'm all ready to start collecting next week.
Leon
Waiting to see who my TA is for a certain course. If it is who I think it is, I'm dropping the course right away! 50% of my mark would be in the TA's hands and this person is known for hating everyone and decimating the class.
