evan88
Well, just wanted to say hi to everyone as this is my first post. Now for my question. I'm just finishing my honours thesis in psychology and I am interested in psychiatry rather than psychology as a field of study. My problem is that I have very little science background with regards to the med school prereqs. I have only taken intro bio, and math to grade 11 with no chemistry and no physics....at all. I am aware that these would have to be direly upgraded. I'm not incapable, just didn't have my life together in highschool (who does?). I currently have a 3.9/4.33 gpa with some degree of research experience and a couple minor publications (conferences, 3rd author on prof's papers etc). My question, and please forgive my ignorance as I am still learning about this process, is: will Med schools be unlikely to accept someone who does not have a BSc, and had to upgrade their science courses from a highschool level after their degree? Am I viable applicant if I can get it together? Thanks for any replies, and any links to "Med School For Beginners" or something of the like would be very useful. dbjones
Hi, You will find that some schools do not even have any prereqs(in terms of courses eg.Western) and many do not discriminate what field your undergraduate degree is based upon. However, that being said almost all schools require some portions or all of the MCAT, which is composed of not only verbal and writing sections but physical sciences (chem/physics) and bio. Your gpa seems to be fine but double check by converting it into the OMSAS which is a gpa rating scale out of 4.0. I suggest taking some first year bio/chem/physics courses and see how that goes. http://www.premed101.com/forums/showthread.php?t=28154 http://www.premed101.com/forums/showthread.php?t=20903 http://www.premed101.com/forums/showthread.php?t=28692 http://www.premed101.com/forums/showthread.php?t=29034 Read these posts and utilize the search function as there is a wealth of information on this forum.
