The general rule is that MOST of your courses in any given year should correspond to the year of your degree. So, if you are in second year, most of your courses should be second year level. But, this does not prevent you from taking a course at the first year level as an elective. Med schools don't check to see what area of study your electives are in... but keep in mind that the 'well rounded' student shines more at an interview than one that has taken 100% theoretical mathematics (or 100% anything) courses...
